Quote checklist.

U-value is clearly stated

A good window should have a U-value of 1.2 W/m²K or lower — ≤1.0 is excellent. Any quote that doesn't state this is hiding something.

Glazing specification is described in full

Look for: double or triple glazing, argon gas fill, Low-E coating, and warm edge spacer bar. Each detail matters and affects thermal performance.

Security accreditation is named

PAS 24 is the minimum standard for windows. "Secured by Design" goes a step further. A vague claim of "secure" without a named certificate means nothing.

Energy rating is stated (A, B or C)

BFRC energy ratings run from A++ to G. A or B rated windows are significantly better than unrated alternatives for heat retention.

Product guarantee length is stated

A credible company offers at least 10 years on products. 20+ years is better — and tells you something about their confidence in what they sell.

Installation guarantee length is stated

The product guarantee means nothing if the installation is poor. Look for at least 5 years on installation, ideally 10.

Guarantee covers parts, labour and workmanship

Many guarantees only cover parts. A parts-only guarantee leaves you paying for labour on any claim — read the small print carefully.

Guarantee is transferable to new owners

If you sell your home, a transferable guarantee is a genuine selling point. Ask whether it transfers automatically or requires formal notification.

Emergency callout policy is described

A broken or jammed door or window is an emergency. Know upfront whether the company offers 24/7 callout — and at what additional cost if any.

Who carries out installation is stated

Employed fitters are directly accountable to the company. Subcontracted fitters can be harder to manage when something goes wrong — ask if not stated.

Making good and finishing is included in the price

"Making good" means repairing any damage around the frames after installation. It should always be included — watch out for companies that charge extra.

Building regulations certificate is included

Window replacements require a certificate by law in Scotland. This should be included in the quoted price, not added as an extra on the day.

Deposit is 25% or less

A deposit of 10–25% is standard practice. Requiring more than 50% upfront is unusual and puts you at real risk if the company has financial difficulties.

What's included is clearly listed

A good quote should state: survey, supply, installation, building regs, making good, finishing and VAT. Missing items become disputes after the work is done.

Each product is described individually

Vague descriptions like "windows x4" make it impossible to compare quotes. Every line item should have a full specification with material, glass type and colour.

Payment terms and finance options are explained

Clear payment stages protect both parties. If finance is available, the APR and terms should be stated upfront — not revealed when you push for it.
